The Ancestors of Jesus Christ

1. These are the names of the ancestors of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ came from the family line of David and from the family line of Abraham.

2. Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Judah and Judah’s brothers.

5. Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab), and Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth), and Obed was the father of Jesse.

6. Jesse was the father of King David; King David was the father of Solomon whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.

10. Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh was the father of Amon, and Amon was the father of Josiah.

11. Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers. This was the time that the Babylonians took the Jews by force and made them live in Babylon.

13. Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud was the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim was the father of Azor.

14. Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok was the father of Achim, and Achim was the father of Eliud.

15. Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar was the father of Matthan, and Matthan was the father of Jacob.

16. Jacob was the father of Joseph, who was Mary’s husband. Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called Christ.

17. So, Jesus Christ ancestors from Abraham’s time to David’s time were fourteen generations. And from David’s time until the time when the Babylonians took the Jews by force to Babylon, were also fourteen generations. And from the time in Babylon until the time of the birth of Jesus Christ, were fourteen generations also.

How Mary Gave Birth to Jesus Christ

18. This is the story about how Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ. Mary had promised to marry one man named Joseph. But before they came together in marriage, Mary found that she was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit.

19. Joseph who had promised to marry Mary was a good man. He did not want to disgrace Mary publicly. So, he decided to quietly break the promise he made to marry Mary.

20. But while Joseph was thinking about these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, descendant of King David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. This is because, it is by the power of the Holy Spirit that she has the baby who is inside her womb.

21. Mary will give birth to a baby boy, and you will give Him the name Jesus. This is because it is Jesus who will save His people from punishment for their sins.”

22. Ọ́l dís tins bin hápun, só dat wétín Gọd tọ́k trú Im prọ́fẹt go hápún as Gọd tọk. Gọd sé,

22. All these things happened so that what God said through His prophet will happen as God said it would. God said,

23. “Wọ́n yọ́ng wúman wé nọ́ nó man go gẹ́t bẹlẹ́, an di wúman go bọ́n bébí bọi. Di nem wé pípul go kọ́l di pikin na Imánúẹl.” (wé mín, ‘Gọd dé wit ọs’).

23. “A young virgin woman will become pregnant, and she will give birth to a baby boy. The name people will call the child is Emmanuel.” (this means, ‘God is with us’).

24. Wẹ́n Jósẹf wék ọ́p frọm slip, i kọ́n dú wétín Gọd énjẹl kọmánd am mék i du. Naím i ték Merí mék i bi im waif.

24. When Joseph woke up from sleep, he did what the angel of God commanded him to do. He took Mary to be his wife.

25. Bọt i nọ́ slíp wit Merí sóteé gó rích di taim wé Merí bọ́n di bébí bọi. An di nem wé Jósẹf gív di pikin na Jízọs.

25. But he did not have sexual relations with Mary until after the baby boy was born. And Joseph gave the child the name Jesus.
